“Anniversary” by Kinki Kids

Happy Valentine’s Day! What did I post about a year ago today, I wondered, and looking it up I found I translated the lyrics for “Eien Ni.” Which was strange because I remember doing that and it doesn’t feel like it was nearly that long ago.

I’m sorry, I should really stop inflicting my translation practice on you. But who am I to ruin a tradition?

From as many people as there are stars,
By chance on that day I met you and fell in love.

Even if I'd been taught that love is suffering,
I would have chosen you without hesitation.

Countless stars in the sky
Are born and go out without being seen.

"I love you," those words,
If I had said them simply, would it have been a comfort?
Because I won't make you cry again,
This 'ordinary' day will be our anniversary.

It's something like a miracle that you love me.
I don't understand the reason, but I guess it's so?

Though our tastes and behaviors are different,
Lately they’ve become similar, friends say.

That day I made you cry by telling lies,
But I stayed silent, unable to do anything.

Just because you exist, ordinary days
Are colored vibrantly, filled with love.
Because I don't want to forget this feeling,
This 'ordinary' day will be our anniversary.

"I love you," those words,
If I had said them simply, would it have been a comfort?
Because I won't make you cry again,
This 'ordinary' day will be our anniversary.

Side-note: I was sick of this song for a while last year, because it was on the cd of tinny instrumentals that they played every day during lunch. This year, they play more classical (if the good students are in control of the broadcast room) or hard rock (if the trouble-students take over). So I’ve had the chance to slowly become fond of “Anniversary” again. The strings are nice, and though it’s cheesy, the cresting melody at “I love you” is moving.
