Our Courage, Chapter Four (part f)

The rain had stopped without them noticing.
Kiichi was so exhausted he easily fell asleep. Yamato was making a barricade in the entrance of the gym.
...Those guys were definitely not going to get a hold of Kiichi again.
He realized Makoto and Akira were standing before his eyes. For an instant, his body jerked away. But the two didn’t look like they were about to attack.
Makoto said, “Don’t get us wrong. We’re not here for Kiichi.”
Akira went on, “But we’re not here to help him either.”
“So what do you want?”
Akira shrugged in response to Yamato’s question.
“We came to switch sides.”
“Those guys chase us around, too. We want to hide somewhere. So we thought it’d be a good idea if we helped you build a barricade. That’s it.”
At their unexpected words, Yamato answered bluntly, “Do what you like.”
And saying nothing more than that, he started piling up the barricade again.

Emily, the barricade part felt solid and transitioned well from one thought to another like a well built fence. love your father
